The establishment of the Faculty of Sharia at Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University (UIN) Malang was aimed at supporting the development of Islamic higher education with a vision of ulul albab (intellectual and pious individuals). Through the learning process at the Faculty of Sharia, it is hoped that scholars and intellectuals will emerge with a deep understanding of Islamic law and legislation, thereby benefiting society and the state.
The Faculty of Sharia was founded based on the Decree of the Director General of Islamic Institutional Affairs No. DJ.II/56/2005 concerning the Authorization for the Implementation of Undergraduate (S-1) and Diploma Two (D2) Programs at UIN Malang. The Al-Ahwal Al-Syakhshiyyah Study Program at the Faculty of Sharia is an extension of the Al-Ahwal Al-Syakhshiyyah Program from the Sharia Department of the State Islamic College (STAIN) Malang, established in the academic year 1997/1998 under the Decree of the Director General of Islamic Institutional Development of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia No. E/107/Year 1998 dated May 13, 1998. To continue the establishment of the Al-Ahwal Al-Syakhshiyyah Program, in 2002, the Director General of Islamic Institutional Development issued Decree No. E/10/Year 2002, which specified that the degree for graduates of the Al-Ahwal Al-Syakhshiyyah Program is Bachelor of Islamic Law, abbreviated as S.HI.
According to the Decree of the Director General of Islamic Higher Education of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia No. Dj.I/422/2007, the Faculty of Sharia at UIN Malang opened the Sharia Business Law (HBS) Study Program. Subsequently, in 2008, the Decree of the Director General of Islamic Higher Education No. Dj.I/233/2008 was issued concerning the establishment of the D3 Sharia Banking Study Program at the Faculty of Sharia. However, the management of the D3 Sharia Banking Program was transferred to the Faculty of Economics at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang based on the Rector’s Decree in 2009. In 2015, the Faculty of Sharia successfully established the Constitutional Law (Siyasah) Study Program, which was approved based on the Decree of the Director General of Islamic Education No. 1278 Year 2015 concerning the Authorization for the Implementation of the Constitutional Law (Siyasah) Study Program at the Undergraduate Program of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. The establishment of this department allows the Faculty of Sharia to contribute to the development of constitutional law knowledge needed by society.
In order to increase the ratio of Islamic sciences, the Faculty of Sharia was entrusted by UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim to open the Qur’anic Studies and Tafsir Program (IAT). It is planned that in the future, the IAT Study Program will be separated from the Faculty of Sharia to become an independent faculty. In 2017, the proposal for opening the IAT Study Program was accepted based on the Decree of the Director General of Islamic Education No. 1084 Year 2017 concerning the Authorization for the Implementation of the Qur’anic Studies and Tafsir Program at the Undergraduate Program of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang.
